Spanish American War

9" single edged clip point Bowie blade with 2.625" false edge and prominent median ridge. Blade 1.75" wide at widest point and 1.5" wide at ricasso. Overall length 13.5". 4.5" standard Krag pattern hilt with iron cross guard and pommel cap, push button lug latch and riveted smooth walnut grip scales. Obverse ricasso marked US and reverse ricasso dated 1900. Includes a blued steel scabbard with belt hanger. Sources vary as to the total of these bayonets being produced for the Krag Rifle in the wake of the Spanish American War. Numbers quoted as between 2,000 and 2,800. Supposedly 500 were sent to Cuba for field testing, while the bulk of the bayonets, some 1,500 were sent to the Philippines. A rare US bayonet not often seen for sale.
